National Land Cover Monitoring System of Nepal (2020-2022)
Abstract
This report presents updated land cover maps and an analysis of land cover changes in Nepal from 2020 to 2022, building on the National Land Cover Monitoring System (NLCMS) established for the period 2000–2019. Using satellite imagery, remote sensing technologies and machine learning, the report assesses 11 land cover categories at national, provincial and physiographic levels. The findings indicate that forest cover increased from 41.71% in 2019 to 43.38% in 2022, while cropland and other wooded land declined and built-up areas expanded. The report provides valuable information to support evidence-based land management, forest conservation, climate change mitigation and national and international reporting, including REDD+.
